Swarthmore Discussion Group: Dan Soffer

Wednesday, March 19
The Inn at Swarthmore
10 S. Chester Rd. Swarthmore, PA 19081

“Deciphering the alphabet of contemporary lipidology: what letters should I ask about at my next visit?”
Dan Soffer, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Penn Medicine, President National Lipid Association

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the most common cause of death in the U.S. and for most of the planet. The most common cause of CVD is atherosclerosis (plaque in the arteries). For more than 100 years, scientists and clinicians have debated the central cause(s), and this public debate has led to misunderstanding, confusion, hyperbole, and misdirection. This conversation is meant to clarify and define what individuals and their families need to know when receiving health care.

The Swarthmore Discussion Group (SDG) presents exceptional speakers on timely topics in a social setting that encourages stimulating discussion. In doing so, SDG enriches the lives and friendships of its members and enhances a sense of community among Swarthmore College alumni, students, their families, nearby residents, and other friends. Our speakers are distinguished scholars, community leaders, and field experts. Following their presentations on topics including politics, foreign affairs, economics, culture, and social issues, they welcome questions from and discussions with and among members.

Schedule:
5:00–6 p.m. Happy Hour
6 p.m. Dinner
7–8:15 p.m. Talk and Q&A

Multimedia help

I would like to employ a student who is multi-media savvy, who has skills and experience with creating multimedia presentations and can both guide me through options and assist me in the creation of a Zoom presentation. I have hired Swarthmore students in the past as research assistants, but this project is smaller and more personal (the history of my family). Work could begin immediately with a target end date of mid-April.

Compensation will be $25.00 – $30.00/ hour depending on skill level and experience.

Shortterm 1mos Rental: 3-4 bedroom home available for 5wks June – July 2025 to caring CAT loving residents – Ideal for a family or graduate student looking to be close to campus

This may be a somewhat unusual exchange, but I know many graduate students look for temporary housing in Swarthmore while researching dissertations or attending a summer course, and sometimes new incoming faculty need temporary housing while looking for homes in the area, so I figured it was worth a shot.

We are looking to rent out our 3-4 bedroom family home between June 6th and July 10th. If you enjoy animals and don’t mind keeping our two cats happy, healthy, and cared for while occasionally watering our vegetable garden (which, of course, you can use), we can certainly figure out a deal that suits both our needs.

We have a cat sitter who lives down the street and comes to our house twice a day to spend a couple of hours with our cats while we are out of town. Still, our one cat is very human-attached, and due to the extended length of time, they would both be happiest with someone staying in the home.

We have three bedrooms, a guest room/office, and two full bathrooms. We have Fios for internet, and the house will stay fully furnished, of course, with a fully stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, driveway parking, electric car hook up, backyard BBQ, firepit, pool table/ping pong in the basement, basketball hoop in the front, etc. We are two blocks from the town center, so it’s an easy walk to campus, the train station (23 minutes to Penn’s campus downtown), grocery co-op, PAC (community center), and library.

If you love cats and this arrangement is of interest to you, please email me for additional photos and details and we can discuss a fair price.

Look forward to hearing from you.
